Caramel Apple Bars Sweet (Print Version)

Buttery bars packed with soft apples and rich caramel, baked to golden perfection.

# Ingredients:

→ Dry Ingredients

01 - 1 2/3 cups flour (spelt, white, or oat)
02 - 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon
03 - 3/4 tsp baking powder
04 - 1/4 tsp salt
05 - 2/3 cup sugar or unrefined sugar

→ Wet Ingredients

06 - 3/4 cup butter or coconut oil
07 - 1 tbsp water (if needed)

→ Filling

08 - 3 cups diced apple (320g)
09 - 1 tbsp cornstarch or arrowroot
10 - 5 oz caramels or dried dates

# Steps:

01 - Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease an 8-inch pan or line the bottom with parchment paper.
02 - In a large mixing bowl, stir together the flour, sugar, cinnamon, salt, and baking powder. If using unsalted butter or oil, add an additional 1/4 tsp salt.
03 - Cut in the softened butter or oil using a pastry cutter, fork, or food processor until small pea-sized crumbles form. If it's too dry, add water slowly.
04 - Press about two-thirds of the dough mixture firmly into the prepared pan.
05 - Toss diced apples with cornstarch in a separate bowl. Spread the apples evenly over the crust in the pan.
06 - Finely chop the caramels or dates and spread them evenly on top of the apples.
07 - Sprinkle the reserved dough over the apple and caramel layers.
08 - Bake for 50 minutes. Let the bars cool fully before slicing.
09 - If using coconut oil, chill bars to aid slicing. Store leftovers in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

# Notes and Tips:

01 - Chilling the bars made with coconut oil helps with firmness and easier cutting.
