Easy Apple Dumplings Caramel (Print Version)

Flaky pastry-wrapped apples with caramel.

# Ingredients:

→ Apple Dumplings

01 - 2 refrigerated pie crusts
02 - 4 medium apples, Honeycrisp or Granny Smith
03 - 2 tablespoons butter, cut into 4 equal pieces
04 - 5 tablespoons light brown sugar
05 - 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
06 - 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
07 - 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
08 - 1/8 teaspoon allspice

→ Caramel Sauce

09 - 1 cup granulated sugar
10 - 6 tablespoons salted butter
11 - 1 cup heavy cream
12 - 1/2 tablespoon vanilla extract
13 - 1/2 teaspoon salt

# Steps:

01 - Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x9 inch baking dish and set aside.
02 - Combine the pie crusts and roll them into a large rectangle. Cut into four 7x7-inch squares. Combine and re-roll dough if necessary.
03 - In a small bowl, combine brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and allspice. Stir until evenly mixed.
04 - Peel and core each apple.
05 - Place 1 apple in the center of each dough square. Add 1 piece of butter and 1 tablespoon of the spiced sugar mixture into the apple’s center. Pull the corners of the dough up around the apple and pinch edges to seal completely.
06 - Arrange the wrapped apples in the prepared baking dish.
07 - In a large saucepan, melt the sugar over medium-high heat, whisking frequently until fully melted. Stop whisking and cook until it turns a dark amber color. Add the butter and whisk until fully combined. Carefully remove from heat and gradually add the cream while whisking. Stir in vanilla and salt.
08 - Pour the caramel sauce over the apples in the baking dish. Sprinkle any remaining spiced sugar mixture on top. Bake for 50-55 minutes, or until golden and apples are tender.
09 - Let the dumplings cool slightly and serve warm, topped with caramel sauce.

# Notes and Tips:

01 - You can substitute homemade pie crust for refrigerated ones if preferred.
02 - Granny Smith apples make for tarter dumplings, while Honeycrisp apples result in sweeter dumplings.
03 - If using unsalted butter, add a couple of pinches of salt to the recipe.
04 - 1 1/2 teaspoons of apple pie spice can replace the individual spices.
