In a large mixing bowl, blend Devil's food cake mix, water, flour, vegetable oil, and the egg with a hand mixer. Use a silicone spatula to ensure all ingredients from the sides of the bowl are incorporated.

Gently fold the chocolate chips and, if desired, the chopped nuts into the batter until evenly distributed.

Using a cookie scoop or tablespoon, drop heaps of dough onto a lined or greased baking sheet, spacing them evenly to allow for spreading.

Bake in a preheated oven at 165°C for 9 minutes if using a convection oven, or 10 minutes in a conventional oven, until the cookies are set at the edges and slightly soft in the center.
