Mix sugar, flour, and salt in saucepan. Whisk in milk and cook over medium heat until thickened and bubbly. Reduce heat and cook 2 more minutes.

Whisk eggs in small bowl. Temper eggs with hot mixture, then add back to pan. Heat to gentle boil for 2 minutes.

Add vanilla and remove from heat. Cool for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

In 8-inch square pan, layer 25 vanilla wafers, half the banana slices, and half the pudding. Repeat layers, ending with pudding.

Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate minimum 4 hours or overnight. Top with crushed wafers before serving.
